Pupil Premium

Each year the school receives money from the government to pay for all of the resources we need to run the school and educate the children. One aspect of this funding is our Pupil Premium Allocation. We are held accountable for how we use the additional funding to support pupils who are eligible for free school meals and from service families. 

 
We have a statutory responsibility to inform you of what we spend our pupil premium on and the academic performance of pupils who are eligible for this funding. More information can be found below on how we spent our pupil premium, along with the outcomes for pupils who were eligible for this funding.
 
 
Service Pupil Premium 
The Department for Education introduced the Service Pupil premium (SPP) in April 2011 in recognition of the specific challenges children from service families face and as part of the commitment to delivering the armed forces covenant.
 
At St Michael's we receive Service Pupil Premium in order to assist us in providing the additional support that service children may need.
 
Eligibility Criteria
Pupil attract SPP if they meet the following criteria:
  • one of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces
  • they have been registered as a 'service child' in the school census at any point since 2011
  • one of their parents died whilst serving in the armed forces and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pension Scheme
  • pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the full time reserve service are classed as service children

 

Purpose of the Service Pupil Premium

The purpose of the funding is to mainly offer pastoral support during challenging times and to help mitigate the negative impact on service children or family mobility or parental deployment.  In 2024 to 2025, we received £12,920.

 
Little Troopers is a registered charity supporting all children with parents serving in the British Armed Forces, regular or reserve. They provide fundamental resources, initiatives and events to ease and aid repeated separation periods aiming to keep parent and child connected and bonded even when miles apart. Tickets for Troops provides free tickets to members of the Armed Forces for a variety of sporting, musical and cultural events. Click here for more information. 
 
Defence Discount Service provides those in the Armed Forces, Veterans and the Defence Community with discounts both online and in store. The Defence Discount Service also allows small and large companies to get involved with offering a discount and encourage companies in local areas to offer discounts to the Armed Forces Community. Pupil Premium.
The Department for Education introduced the Pupil Premium (PP)  in April 2011 in recognition of the specific challenges children from disadvantaged backgrounds may have.
 
At St Michael's we receive Pupil Premium in order to assist us in providing the additional support that children from disadvantage backgrounds have.
 
Eligibility Criteria
Pupil attract PP if they meet the following criteria:
  •  qualify for free school meals at any point in the past six years.
  •  are or have been looked after under local authority care for more than one day

 

Purpose of the Pupil Premium

The purpose of the funding is to provide academic support to those children who are entitled to the premium, as statistics show that these children do not achieve as well as their peers.  In 2024/2025 we received £130,930 (with an additional £37,332 carry forward from 23/24).

The Governing Body at St Michael’s is accountable for ensuring the  Service Pupil Premium and the Pupil Premium received is used wisely.  Every school is required to explain publicly how the Pupil Premium is spent and how it helps to improve the outcomes for those targeted pupils.
